Get an Experienced Special Educator’s Perspective on Your Child’s IEP

IEPs can be difficult to evaluate when you are the parent sitting on the other side of the table. You may understand what the document says but still wonder: Are these goals meaningful? Do the present levels accurately describe my child? Are the accommodations appropriate? Are the services addressing the areas that matter most? What questions should I be asking?

TalkSPED offers individual IEP consultations designed to give parents an experienced educator’s perspective on their child’s IEP.

I spent more than a decade working as a Special Education teacher. During that time, I developed, implemented, and participated in IEPs for students with a wide range of needs. My goal with this service is simple: to help you better understand your child’s IEP, identify areas worth discussing with the IEP team, and prepare you to participate in the process with greater confidence.

What Is Included?

Complete IEP Review

Before we meet, I will review your child’s current IEP from an educational perspective. I will look at the major components of the document, including:

Present levels of academic achievement and functional performance

Annual goals

Accommodations and modifications

Special education and related services

Progress monitoring

How well the different parts of the IEP align with one another

Areas that may need clarification or further discussion with the IEP team

I pay particular attention to annual goals. A goal should do more than satisfy a requirement on an IEP. It should identify an important skill, provide a meaningful direction for instruction, and give the team a useful way to determine whether the student is actually making progress.

When appropriate, I will suggest areas where goals can be improved for your child's educational success.

30-Minute Parent Consultation

After I review the IEP, we will meet privately for a 30-minute virtual consultation.

This is intended to be a comfortable, informal conversation rather than a presentation. We can go through my observations, discuss your concerns, talk about what you can expect during the IEP process, and address questions you have about your child's program.

I will explain what I see in the IEP, identify areas I think deserve particular attention, and offer recommendations from an educator's perspective. You can also bring specific questions or concerns that you would like to discuss.

30 Days of Follow-Up Questions

Questions often don't end when the consultation ends. You may think of something afterward, receive clarification from the school, or have additional questions as you prepare for or participate in an IEP meeting.

Your consultation therefore includes 30 days of reasonable email follow-up.

Follow-up questions are included in the original consultation price.

Price $79

The price includes the IEP review, a 30-minute virtual parent consultation, and 30 days of follow-up email questions concerning the IEP reviewed.

What This Service Is — and What It Is Not

TalkSPED Parent Consultation is intended to provide educational information from an experienced educator. I can help you understand your child's IEP, evaluate how its components work together, identify questions you may want to ask, and suggest areas you may want to discuss with your child's IEP team.

I do not provide legal advice or legal representation, determine whether a school or school district is in legal compliance, or represent parents at IEP meetings or disputes.

Parents who need legal advice regarding their child's rights or a dispute with a school should consult a qualified special education attorney or appropriate legal professional.

Before We Begin

After scheduling your consultation, email me a PDF copy of your child's current IEP along with any specific questions or concerns you would like me to consider. You are welcome to remove any identifying information before sending the document. All IEP documents received will be treated as confidential.

You know your child better than anyone. My role is to bring another perspective to the table—one informed by years of experience developing and working with IEPs—and help you understand the document well enough to have a more productive conversation with your child's educational team.
